It would be fit to whip out the body bag right about now. Omega's claims of their other products seem to have proven the whole organization a hoax. A global village engineer was nice enough to send us his comments on the subject. After reading the information below, I would assume it appropriate to call all of Omega a hoax as technological fact has proven them to be no more but a bunch of dreamers.

So I went to their website, which has been updated with frames, displaying
their other "products." One which made me chuckle is this: The "Hermes"
PCMCIA card. I will comment on the ridiculous claims one by one (I'm a
hardware engineer at Global Village)...
Typ: PCMCIA-Card
Dimensions : Typ III
<Type III? Isn't that for hard drives?>
Processor: A 100
<What the hell is an "A100?">
Chipset: Hermes Chipset Version 1
<perhaps - I'VE never heard of this>
FlashBIOS: 4 MByte
<the largest flash we ever use in our PC Cards is 4MBIT (not byte). Four
megabytes of FLASH would take at least 4 8MBit FLASH parts. Doubtful>
RAM: 2 MByte
<DRAM? If not (and they mean SRAM), this is REALLY excessive, power-hungry,
and expensive. If it is DRAM, I'd also be suprised, as DRAM usually isn't
fast enough for modem applications>
Hermes
Hermes, the Greek messenger of gods and travel companion who showed the
souls of the departed the way to the other world. This very old god of
Greek mythology was said to be extremely intelligent and fast.
Intelligence and speed, these are the most important features of our
product, Hermes. Incorporating a high proportion of artificial
intelligence, this product is much more than just a modem capable of
transmitting real 115,200 bit/s without resorting to compression. In
Hermes, we have combined the latest technologies into a unique
communication tool in a minimum of space. Just imagine! Modem, ISDN, Fax
and Ethernet functions in one single PCMCIA card.
<just imagine indeed>
All these features are included in the Hermes 115.2,which is available as
PCMCIA-Card, external device and as a PCI-Card. The associated software
allows you to use this multi talent on different computers (e.g. PowerMac's
and IBM-compatible). Hermes 115.2 conquers from a pool of Modem,ISDN and
Ethernet components, which representing the latest state-of the-art in the
field of transmission engineering. It allows the transmission of data at
real speeds of 115,200 bit/s (analog), 128,000 bit/s (ISDN) and up to
14,400 bit/s (faxes). If C3-DC data compression is used, transmission rates
up to 900,000 bit/s become possible.
<oh man. First of all, 115,200 analog is really a misleading statement. A
SERIAL port can do 115,200, but modems almost never get that kind of
throughput. Second of all, how would you create an external device out of
this (perhaps with multiple cables - ethernet AND serial)? Third of all,
what the hell is "C3-DC data compression?" I'm familiar with LZS and MPPC
compression for ISDN, but C3-DC?>
Hermes will cost between 685 US$ and 850 US$.
Contrary to our earlier announcement, the completion will unfortunately be
delayed. At this time there are still some aspects to be fully refined.(the
layout is too fine for existing manufacture)
<sure it is. What manufacturer creates a chip that has too fine a pitch
(pitch is the distance between pins) to even use in a product? Nobody.>
and a profitable production is not yet practicable. We will inform you as
soon as the situation is resolved.

So basically, we have claims of running 10/100, x2, K56Flex, and ISDN all

own. So they would have to license code, port it to their hardware, and
then cram all this crap into a PC card.
No way. Ever.
These guys are bizzare. If only we knew their motives.

----------------- End Message -----------------Omega's PR E-Mail Response
A second reader of Reality recently mailed Omega demanding answers, explanations, and proof of COS. In response he received the e-mail published below. As you can see for yourselves, this is far from believable, nevertheless verbally understandable.---------------- Begin Message ----------------

Dear Mr. xxxxx,
I have a little question. What could be happend, that you and all the
others would believe something? I will give you the answer. The final
version.
Why?
Screenshots are no proof. How many every-thing-better-knowing people
would say, that we only made some screenshots with the photoshop?
Delivering Beta-Versions is too dangerous, because a lot of people,
named "Hacker" , would be able to learn, how to crack the comming final.
COS IS A CRYPTOSYSTEM AT FIRST!!
Sir, we also need something. We need the final to earn money. The last
years, we only have invested, but we are not Apple, which is able to
lose many million dollars.
Since last year, we had to invest over 1 million DM more, because Apple
canceled
Copland. So, we are waiting much more longer to have succes like you
must wait to a product.
Ok, the date was November 13th. Now is December. And I fear, that it
will be 1998, when we are ready. There are a lot of problems, that must
be solved now, not only technical.
COS is real, Mr. Kiernan, and you have no reason, to have doubt.
If you need to be anger to someone, send this anger to Apple or MS, they
are permanently giving new dates of their products. To remembrance: OS
8.0 should have Quicktime 3.0 and HFS+. Was it so? Did you buy it
nevertheless?
Sincerely
Manfred
PS: Sorry for my bad english.
Two atoms are walking down the street and they run in to each
other.
One says to the other, "Are you all right?"
"No, I lost an electron!"
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm positive!"
----------------- End of Message -----------------And the mystery, still at large, what are their motives? Don't these people have something better to do?
As mentionned earlier, I spent most of the day at the I-Net World Expo at the Jacob Javits Convention Center (the future home of MacWorld NY) in NYC. Apple was a registered exibitor but obviously backed out of the expo. While I found the experience to be very energetic, it was a shame for the MacUser. With over 6 blocks of exibits and tens of thousands of PCs, I only saw the presence of about 20-25 Macintoshes. Two at AOL, one at Sun, another at Symantec, and so on.
Adobe surprised me the most; it was all PCs, although their the free CD was hybrid. Microsoft, of course, dominated an entire section of floor space with their colossal displays, which when viewed by the public eye, proclaim: "We are Microsoft, we own the world". Close by was SUN (they gave away these cool hats) who publically attacked and joked about Microsoft and their perception of 100% pure Java, in their hourly demonstrations. I found it rather humorous.
Oracle had more staff on hand than the 34th precinct has cops. Intel had this HUGE podium and spectator seating area with this woman who came across as the human comercial. IBM had a nice booth with a very large picture screen running their current comercials.
I consider the Internet to be in the catagory of "Creative Content", the web, what is wrong with Apple? It was as if they didn't exist.
MacOS 9.0 For Intel Hardware Update!
I'd like to first start out by addressing some misunderstandings of the original MacOS for Intel rumor. We aimed to state that a NT kernel for the MacOS to run on Intel might be an option. We did not intend to state that the MacOS was going all Intel and each copy would ship with a NT kernel, and I don't think we did, however many misread our claims.
The Logical Assumptions
The aspect of a NT kernel as the base to a MacOS for Intel is sounding very unlikely as time goes on. It has been hinted to us that this portion of our rumor has no real basis and really doesn't make sense. We agree. It should also be re-noted that John Dvorak, a PCMag columnist, was the basis of the NT kernel rumor and is still standing by his work as the below e-mail snippit from John to Reality displays..."The facts are outlined..the extrapolation of those facts are mine..and nobody will say I'm wrong."
Perhaps John is confused and is really refering to Rhapsody's Yellow Box running on WindowsNT. Also, as many readers have pointed out, Apple would have to be nuts to go with an inferior NT kernel when they have Mach. Mach, already working on Intel, would be the obvious choice if Apple did decide to build the Blue Box for Intel. The Blue Box for Rhapsody PPC is already running on top of the Mach kernel.
MacOS Already Ported To Intel Hardware
In 1992 a group of 18 engineers, 4 from Novell, 14 from Apple set out to accomplish the impossible, porting the MacOS to Intel. They succeeded within 3 months but the product never made its way to the market. Why? Political reasons: Microsoft. Star Trek (the code name for the Intel project) was laid to rest in 93 when the top executives backing the project were no longer in their positions. It's been rumored that the original members of the 18 man Star Trek team reunited last month to converse as Apple is again thinking Intel.
The Star Trek project is proof that Apple has the technological skill to bring the current MacOS to Intel if they desire.
The Reality
Our speculation is far ahead of its time. This summer's update to the MacOS will most likely have no affiliation with the Wintel world as it is already nearing the alpha phase. However, the MacOS for Intel is not out of the question and will most likely start to see the light of day in the coming year. Apple needs to beef up the MacOS, bring it up to date via the Allegro and Sonata releases. Then, and only then, will Apple have a reason to reconsider the entrance of the MacOS to the PC platform. There is no sense porting an Operating System 13 years later if there are no major advancements. Regardless, a MacOS for Intel would be a market expansion rather than a shift of platform. [See our PPC update]
Apple will be testing the Wintel waters with their PC version of Rhapsody. If Rhapsody for the PC goes mainstream the MacOS for Intel will have a real market to enter.
The PowerPC
Though there is an incentive to believe Motorola's leave from PPC production by the year 2000, it goes without saying that the PowerPC is the MacOS and vice versa. The rumor, and logical solution would be for Apple to either hand the PowerPC development over to another company or take on the development responsibilities themselves. The latter being a more realistic solution in our opinion. Now, more than ever, with the entrance of the G3s, the PowerPC is a top contender in the market as it continues to increase it's lead over the opposing processors, and this is something Steve and Apple can not and will not ignore. The PowerPC is the base and it's the future (with or without Motorola) of Apple Computer.
MacOS 8.1 Beta 5 Seeded To Developers
An anonymous source sends us some information on MacOS8.1b5 which was seeded to developers before the weekend.
MacOS 8.1 beta 5
The OS is as stable as anyone could image with slight speed inprovements over the previous beta release. A large number of HFS Plus (MacOSExtended) bugs have been fixed in this release, including the ones causing disk corruption. A few readers reported beta 4 to crash only with an illegal instruction on shut down, this too has been fixed. The Special menu has now been reverted to the default label "Special" and the Installer now readers MacOS 8.1. Also, the readme files now contain the actual readmes.
Open Transport
Open Transport 1.3 has gone Golden Master with this release and is ready for distribution. Open Transport 1.3 increases speed, fixes bugs and supports multihoming: multiple IPs for a single machine.
Complete Components
Desktop Pictures 1.0.1,Apple 10/100 Fast Ethernet 2.0.1,PC Exchange 2.2,Text Encoding Converter 1.3,Apple IX3D Graphics Accelerator 1.0,Apple IX3D Graphics Accelerator 1.0, Apple IX3D Video Memory Manager 1.0, and all MacOS Language Encodings have all been completed with beta 5.
Golden Masters
The MacOS 8.1 Info Center,Apple DVD-ROM 1.0 and Apple CD-ROM 5.4.2 have gone Golden Master with MacOS 8.1 beta 5.
Other...
Mac Runtine for Java is in version 2.0b6c40.
Appearance components are now in version 1.0.1f2c1Apparently there still remains a short list of bugs which indefinately means at least one more beta release before Apple issues MacOS 8.1 to the Final Candidate Stage. As we've mentioned before, our sources tell us this is the most stable, usable MacOS ever.

This next bit of news about the CompUSA Apple Stores comes from myself. And I don't know who lies at fault for this issue but someone better take charge sooner or later, otherwise the Apple Stores in CompUSA's are just a big waste of floor space.
The Good
This past weekend, Saturday at 3:30pm EST to be exact, I took a ride down to my local CompUSA in White Plains, NY (One of the 54 stores Apple has converted to date). The place was jam packed, people running all over the place, checkout lines into the software aisles, employees rushing to get all those Compaqs to the checkout counter, and I just missed getting hit by a a flying box of Microsoft Power Point which wound up hitting some old lady carying a CDROM drive. Finally I made it to the usual Apple Macintosh section and to my surprise...It was beautiful! 3 mid sized Think Different banners hung from the very low ceiling (no large red "Apple" sign, which really bothers me...it should be there), various Macintosh posters were placed around the walls and above the PowerMacs, and many other advertisements which I cannot recall. The setup was amazing, it was about 10% of the store, maybe a little less, though this CompUSA being one of the smaller ones it was nowhere near the size of the Apple Store in the QuickTime VR movies. The mini display aisles were very professional with the Think Different extended mouse pads, the Apple section labels, and the nice red Apple pricing signs. There were various end displays reading "Games" and "Portability" and "Multimedia" (I think) each containing a running PowerMac or PowerBook. There was a section for scanners, joysticks, controlers, disks, and software. Many of the PowerMacs were running with Quake or other forms of software. It was without a doubt the best looking section of the store. I wouldn't expect anything less from Apple.
The Bad
The visual experience was the extent to my happiness as the smile soon drowned from my face. I began walking around, taking note of the products being displayed. There were many 8600/300s, lots of 6500's, but no G3 towers! In fact, the only PowerMac G3 they had was a 233 and it was OFF. I couldn't get it to turn on, and the same goes for the new Apple Vision monitor. One of them, and it was OFF. I then went looking for the portables and found the aisles with the PowerBooks. There was an eMate, a PowerBook G3 (this surprised me), and a 2400. The PowerBook 1400 was missing and the 3400c/240 was OFF. I could not find the power plug and soon gave up trying because these things were all alarmed, and if I even touched the back of them, that damn beeping would go off. Anyways, I proceeded to the Software section which was very small, it was actually a lot bigger before the conversion. They had it so half the good stuff looked as if it was in the converging PC section and vice versa. To top that off, the whole top storage section was stocked with extra PC software (in the Mac area). I then realized something, the Apple Store was quite empty compared to the rest of the store. There were two kids playing Quake on two of the Power Macs, another looking at Software, a man desperately looking for help buying a scanner, and two others interested in PowerBooks. I could see their eyes scanning the store looking for an employee to help them, but you guessed it, not a soul in sight. I became very frustrated and strolled in the direction of the PCs where it was so crowded I could barely get through. There were at least 2 employees per square yard in the PC section, each helping customers. The same went for the PC laptop section. I attempted to get some help over to the Apple section but the employee I talked to said she knew nothing about the Macintosh section or who works there. I then went back and checked to see if maybe someone had shown up who had maybe been filling an order. No such luck. Customers roamed in and out, walking away frustrated and as empty handed as they came in. If I wasn't already late for work, I would have helped these people myself.
Apple: What's The Deal?
A nice display does nothing but please the eye. Customers cannot and will not purchase a computer if there is no one there to help them; that includes me, a Macintosh expert for the past 10 years. In fact, I'd be very surprised if a single Apple Computer rolled out of that store the entire day. This is prime shopping season, and despite the recent claims by Apple to have two designated employees at each store, there were NONE, as in ZERO, ZILCH, NADA. This is something I feel very strongly about, and hiding it from the public hurts no one but Apple. Hopefully someone who reads Reality will know, or be, the proper person to deal with this situation because I cannot find one, and the Apple press contacts and feedback addresses are like an automated transfer point. I never get anywhere that way. The basic point of the story is that I spent 45 minutes inside a CompUSA watching the Dells, Packard Bells, and Compaqs roll out the doors and not a single Apple when there should have been dozens with all the potential customers roaming the Apple Store looking for help. And like I said, while the visual aspect and floor space has improved, no one is going to buy anything without assistance, and they really can't because the majority of the hardware is in the back room. There are only a few weeks left to the holidays...what is the deal?
If you've had a similar experience, you can let me know. If you've had a positive experience, then great, Apple must be doing their job in your specific area and that's all that counts. However, they aren't doing their job in White Plains, NY. And like I said, holding this information back would be hurting no one but Apple. We wouldn't preach if we didn't care.
-Jeff

MacOS Extended Volume Organization
Thanks to an anonymous industry source who forwards Reality the following details on the new HFS Plus (MacOSExtended) volume format to be included with the release of Bride Of Buster (MacOS 8.1)
content removed!
Please note that at the present time the MacOS will not support the majority of the HFS Plus features; this includes the 255 character files names listed above. Hopefully the ability to use these features will be available to us with this summer's release of Allegro. More updates to come as MacOS 8.1 enters the final beta stages and turns Golden Master.
Apple Shuts Down Developer Seeding FTP
An anonymous source sends us a memo sent to Apple developers yesterday announcing the indefinite shut down of the Apple Developer seeding FTP site which enables developers to immediately download software seedings as they are made available, instead of waiting for the monthly CD.
Apple Developer Relations has chosen to immediately shut down our FTP
seeding server due to serious violations against the Apple Seeding Projects
Prototype License and Confidentiality Agreement (NDA) by some developers in
the Apple Technology Seeding Program. We apologize for the inconvenience
this causes those of you who have respected the terms of the NDA. The
server will remain closed until further notice. Seeding Program
participants will continue to receive software via the monthly Apple
Technology Seed CD.Although some might commend Apple for this security measure, it is unnecessary. According to a reader, Apple had the FTP set to accept anonymous logins and non developers were taking advantage of this. Instead of disabling one of the most, if not the most, important features of the development program, Apple should take the necessary steps to secure their development program. This means individual logins and passwords with IP restrictions for each login. Many sites use this policy and it would put an end to Apple's troubles, within limits. 10,000 developer logins and passwords is a large database, but possible. Each developer would be issued a login/password and would need to submit their IP(s). Dynamic IPs, too.
Example
John Doe
John Doe's IP:123.45.678.91
Login:JohnDoe234
Password:*******
IPs accepted for login : 123.45.678.xx or 123.45.xxx.xxIf Apple keeps the FTP down, it will surely hurt them more than anyone in breach of the NDA agreements could.

Ever since Omega failed to deliver COS, I have received various e-mails. The national prank day, the continued vapor ware saga, and so on. According to Macintouch, Omega recently published a note on their site which read "...we are urgently seeking the following software: System 8 (Copland) Build D11 e1/DR2-Release." This is stupidity, I see no reason why they would need Copland to further their development; unless they plan to steal components, and or base COS entirely on Copland, both of which will be proven illegal by Apple in court.
A few of the better notes I have received read...COS is the root of a latin word meaning "fake."
[Thanks John]
For what it's worth, I just caught an old X-Files episode, and right at the beginning the prominently displayed computer has "COS" in large letters. In smaller letters underneath, it reads: Central Operating System. If COS is indeed a hoax, perhaps all the hype can be chalked up as an X-File. ; )
[Thanks Jay]
Yesterday I have talked with somebody from Omega - actually I sent them a mail where I have asked for additional information and they called me back - international call, very expensive in Germany, believe me. I guess now, that I will soon read in a newspaper article that "even the Finns believed in our joke" ;-)
There was a similar joke some two years ago, where some east-germans declared that they want to open a "Ossi Park", where you can see all the things that made the DDR so unique. Including parts of the Berlin wall, etc. They even had a logo for it, which looked very much like the one for "Jurassic Park" ;-)[Thanks Sascha]
I just thought we would share those with you. Again, Macintouch has done a great job with their COS Page, basically it proves Omega's claims to be false. The question is still "why?". Why bother? Why is someone at Omega sitting at the phone ready to call people overseas if they doubt the product? Why pay for a booth at MW Germany?
Update
Here's a bit of a follow up on the COStupidity. It's very well possible that Omega ='s a bunch of couch potatos with beer bellies....Just a note if you watch X-files and saw last nights episode you will have notice that COS was a major player last night. COS Central Operating System ie the operating system that kills people. I find it hard to think this is a not a prank on everyone out there. To have the features of a true operating system you would need more ram then they claim COS can run under.
[Thanks Kevin]
The one factor that has kept hopes alive has been Omega's appearance at MacWorld Germany. After reading several comments on that particular expo, it's very likely the appearance was part of the hoax as you can read for yourself below.MW Germany ? Well, I wouldn't be surprised to see them there -- the expo has been a joke in itself ever since it's inception in the early '90s. I still remember hand-scrawled signs on standard letter-sized paper flapping in the bitter wind (making them even more unnoticeable and practically illegible) at the Frankfurt fair grounds pointing the way to "McWorld" (NOT a typo !). What will really be interesting is to see if they are represented at all at the next CeBit (in March?) in Hannover -- or whether the COS rumor-mill has ground to a halt by then, having churned out its last poor sap...
[Thanks Tom]
With every passing day COS fades further from reality to the point of idiocy. To poke a few holes in Omega's claims take a look at their default page which statesWhy did we not display a few screenshots or demos and why have we still not done so?
Because every opportunity will be used to stop COS. Whether the statements are valid or not, our progress can be severely impeded by imputation.Well, if you ask me, this is plain stupid. If posting screen shots will cause a rush by Apple to stop COS what will the release of the damn thing do? And if Omega wasn't in fragment of Apple patents, why would they care? So the scenarios that remain are 1) Omega has stolen a large portion of Apple code and or technologies, maybe even Copland components or framework and are in violation of Apple copyright and/or patents. They are going to try and release this...uhh...yeah. 2) The "Omega Team" are a bunch of software pirates who love to see their joke extended beyond imaginable realms while collecting confidential Apple software.
So COS is coming out and OJ is innocent....
